Have you always been curious about what lies below the surface?  Now is the time to find out!  Start the journey of a lifetime with the PADI Open Water Diver course — the first scuba certification level. It will change you forever!

In this course, you will learn the basics of how to scuba dive and discover the new adventures that await you. You will start the knowledge development portion and then progress to confined water and then the open water.  

A highly-trained PADI Instructor will teach you how to scuba dive in a relaxed, supportive learning environment. 

Course Prerequisites

  • 10 years minimum age
  • Able to swim
  • Comfortable in the water
  • Medically fit for diving

Certification Requirements

  • Knowledge Development: (eLearning, independent study, or in a classroom)
  • Confined Water Dives: 1 to 5 dives to learn basic scuba skills.
  • Open Water Dives: 1 to 4 to review skills and explore!

Time Commitment

  • Knowledge development: 5-10 hours
  • Waterwork: 4 days

During the course, your instructor will need you to meet these water skills requirements:

    • Float or tread water without aids for 10 minutes
    • Swim 200 meters/yards with no aids or 300 meters/yards with mask, fins, and snorkel.
    • Maximum depth of 18 meters/60 feet.

PADI Open Water Diver - Referral

The referral allows you to begin your knowledge development and study with a PADI center in your hometown – then finish your certification dives once you're here.

Can’t decide whether to get your scuba certification while on vacation or at home before you travel? With a PADI® Open Water referral, you don’t have to choose! A PADI referral allows you to complete most of your scuba training at home – then, finish your certification dives once you're here. This means you can avoid studying during your vacation! 


Sign-up at a PADI shop at home and do the confined water work in a pool and theoretical part with your local instructor. After completion, your local instructor will sign your PADI Referral forms. Our instructors will complete your training with 4 open water boat dives. Once certified, you can spend the rest of your time exploring with your dive buddy and gaining additional dive experience. 


Course prerequisites: 

  • 10 years minimum age 
  • Able to swim, medically fit for diving, comfortable in the water 
  • Original referral forms from your local dive center; completed knowledge and confined-water dives



Time commitment: 

  • Referral Open-water dives: 1.5 days (4 dives)

Upon completion, you'll receive your PADI Open Water Diver certification, which is the first scuba certification level. Then, a highly-trained PADI Instructor will teach you how to scuba dive in the warm waters of Roatan!  By the end of the course, you'll have the skills and knowledge to dive at home or abroad and be an ambassador for the underwater world.

  • 5 confined/shallow-water practice "mini dives."

The Advanced Open Water Diver course is all about advancing your skills. You'll practice navigation and buoyancy, try deep diving and make three specialty dives of your choosing.

The Advanced Open Water Diver course is all about advancing your skills. You'll practice navigation and buoyancy, try deep diving and make three specialty dives of your choosing (it's like a specialty sampler platter). For every specialty dive you complete, you can earn credit toward PADI® specialty certifications.


PADI Advanced Open Water Certification is a two-day course consisting of five dives:


  • Two core dives: Deep and Underwater Navigation 
  • Three elective dives: Night, Fish ID, Multi-level, Wreck, Drift, u/w Naturalist, Buoyancy, Equipment, or Boat. 
Course prerequisites:

  • 12 years minimum age
  • Open Water Diver/Junior Open Water Diver (or qualifying certification)
  • The maximum depth depends on your age, but maximum depth is up to 21 meters/70 feet

Have you always wanted to try digital underwater photography, wreck diving, or deep diving? There’s a long list of scuba adventures you can take part in during this program. Complete three Adventure Dives and you earn the Adventure Diver certification.  It’s a great opportunity to work with your instructor to build your scuba skills and gain more confidence. Learn all about the new nitrox diving and how you can increase your bottom time. Only a little studying and a lot of diving!

Enriched air, also known as nitrox or EANx, contains less nitrogen than regular air. Breathing less nitrogen means you can enjoy longer dives and shorter surface intervals. No wonder Enriched Air Diver is the most popular PADI® specialty.


After finishing your independent study, you'll learn how to analyze a tank, fill out an enriched air log, and set your dive computer for nitrox. There are two optional dives.

This course is a subset of the PADI Open Water Diver course. If you're short on time but really want to become a diver, the PADI Scuba Diver course might be right for you.

The PADI Scuba Diver course is a subset of the PADI Open Water Diver course. If you're short on time but really want to become a diver, the PADI Scuba Diver rating might be right for you ̶ particularly if you expect to go scuba diving primarily with a dive guide. This course is an intermediate step for earning an Open Water Diver certification if that's your ultimate goal.


PADI Scuba Divers are qualified to:

  • Dive under the direct supervision of a PADI Professional to a maximum depth of 12 meters/40 feet.
  • Obtain air fills, rent or purchase scuba equipment and participate in dive activities as long as properly supervised.
  • Continue dive training by completing the PADI Open Water Diver certification and taking certain specialty diver courses.

The PADI Scuba Diver course consists of three main phases:

  • Knowledge Development (eLearning, independent study, or in a classroom) to understand basic principles of scuba diving - just the first three of five sections of the Open Water Diver course.
  • Confined Water Dives to learn basic scuba skills - just the first three of five dives of the Open Water Diver course
  • Open Water Dives to use your skills and explore - just two of four dives of the Open Water Diver course.
